Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to announce his decision on who will take over Senator Marco Rubio’s seat as early as January. The governor’s office is currently reviewing several candidates to fill the vacancy, which will arise when Rubio leaves to become Secretary of State under President-elect Donald Trump.
In a statement, DeSantis confirmed that the process of vetting candidates is already underway. “We are receiving strong interest from multiple individuals,” he said. “We plan to conduct more thorough interviews over the coming weeks, aiming to make a final decision in early January.”
As discussions unfold, some prominent figures, including Senate colleagues and Republican allies, are recommending Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of Donald Trump, as a potential successor for Rubio. Other supporters of Lara include Senator Rick Scott from Florida and Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, among others.
DeSantis, known for his conservative policies, emphasized that Florida deserves a senator who will strongly support President Trump’s agenda. He stressed the importance of focusing on issues like immigration, border security, and fiscal responsibility.
The governor’s measured approach to this decision illustrates his intent not to make hasty conclusions. He possesses the authority under Florida law to appoint someone temporarily to this Senate seat until the next general election.
Potential candidates for the role also include figures like James Uthmeier, who is DeSantis’s chief of staff, and other notable state leaders.
DeSantis’ statement clearly indicates that he is considering all options and will choose a candidate aligned with conservative principles and capable of delivering results for Florida.
