Wofford Triumphs Over Furman 19-13 in Close Matchup
GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Wofford College Terriers emerged victorious against the Furman University Paladins, winning 19-13 in a tightly contested game at Paladin Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The matchup started evenly, with the teams knotted at 10-10 at halftime, but Wofford’s defense limited Furman to just three points in the second half.
The Terriers showcased a robust offensive performance, accumulating a season-best 385 total yards, while their defense made a significant impact with 13 tackles for loss, restricting the Paladins to only 55 rushing yards.
With this win, Wofford improves to a record of 5-5 overall and 3-4 in the Southern Conference, while Furman falls to 2-7 and 1-4 in the league.
Wofford’s standout players included Ryan Ingram, who rushed for 120 yards on 23 carries with one touchdown, and Kyle Watkins, who caught five passes for 106 yards. Quarterback Amari Odom completed 14 out of 25 passes for 212 yards. For Furman, quarterback Carson Jones threw for 229 yards with 21 completions out of 33 attempts, while Colton Hinton had five catches for a mere 7 yards.
Head coach Shawn Watson expressed pride in his team’s effort, saying, “Anytime you win, it is an awesome thing. It is hard to win in college football, and I am proud of our kids. The football team we played today is very well coached, and I have all the respect in the world for Coach Hendrix. We knew it was going to be a fight, and our kids did a great job.”
Furman struck first with a touchdown from Myion Hicks to take a 7-0 lead early in the game. However, Wofford responded with a touchdown of its own, tying the game at 7-7 after a pass from Odom to Dylan Djete. The teams exchanged possessions before Wofford kicked a field goal to close out the half tied at 10-10.
In the second half, Wofford took the lead with a 38-yard field goal and extended it with a touchdown run from Ingram, pushing the score to 19-10. Furman managed to kick a field goal in the fourth quarter but could not find the end zone again.
Despite both teams struggling to capitalize on opportunities and facing several three-and-outs, Wofford’s defense held strong, ultimately sealing the win as they stopped Furman’s final drive.
Overall, Wofford recorded a total of 232 receiving yards and won the first down battle, 17 to 15, showcasing their strength and determination throughout the match.
