A Native American tribe in South Dakota has recently lifted its ban on Republican Governor Kristi Noem, showing support for her nomination to become the Secretary of Homeland Security. This letter of endorsement came from Tony Reider, the president of the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, who announced that the tribe’s executive committee had voted to revoke the ban originally placed on Noem in May.
Reider’s letter arrives just days before Noem is set to appear before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee for her confirmation hearing. In his correspondence, Reider congratulated Noem on her nomination by President-elect Donald Trump and expressed confidence in her ability to enhance the safety and security of the nation.
This change of heart from the tribe comes after a period of tension, during which all nine native tribes in South Dakota had banned Noem from their reservations due to her controversial remarks regarding tribal leadership and the immigration crisis. The Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe was the last to impose this ban.
Noem had faced backlash for her comments suggesting that some tribal leaders may be benefiting from drug cartels and for her statements concerning the struggles of Native American children. In light of this, Reider acknowledged in his letter that Noem has since apologized and clarified her intentions regarding her previous statements.
The governor’s recent actions and her willingness to engage with tribal representatives have helped mend relations. Reider noted that Noem sought advice on how to communicate effectively moving forward, which was appreciated by the tribe.
As Noem prepares for her upcoming confirmation hearing, she has received endorsements from various law enforcement groups, emphasizing her commitment to strengthen border security. This backing comes at a crucial time when concerns about illegal immigration have escalated, particularly under the past administration. Prominent voices, including Republican Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, have called for swift confirmation of Noem in light of recent events, including a terrorist attack that occurred in New Orleans.
Support for Noem continues to grow as she stands ready to take on a vital role in national security, with many believing her leadership could bring positive changes in addressing key issues affecting the country.
