HOUSTON — In a remarkable moment during the Texans’ wild-card playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday, Houston’s D’Angelo Ross made history by returning a blocked extra point for two points. This play marks the first of its kind in NFL postseason history.
The exciting play unfolded in the fourth quarter after Chargers’ Ladd McConkey scored on an impressive 86-yard reception. Following this, Cameron Dicker attempted the extra point but it was blocked by Denico Autry. The ball soared into the air, and despite Dicker’s effort to catch it, it slipped from his grasp. Ross capitalized on the mistake and brought the ball back for a two-point score, extending Houston’s lead to 25-12. The Texans ultimately won the game with a final score of 32-12, making it a uniquely historic outcome.
Houston’s coach, DeMeco Ryans, was initially frustrated after the long touchdown but his mood shifted dramatically when he saw the surprising turn of events during the extra point. “I wasn’t really looking until I heard the big thump and we got it,” he shared, adding that witnessing Ross pick up the ball and sprint towards him brought a smile to his face.
Since the NFL revised its rules in 2015 to award two points for an extra point returned for a score, this was only the ninth such instance recorded, according to Sportradar. The last time this happened in the regular season was on September 29, 2024, when the Eagles executed a similar play against Tampa Bay.
In the fast-paced world of football, moments like these remind fans why they love the game—unexpected excitement and the thrill of defying the odds.
