BALTIMORE — Brian Matusz, a noteworthy left-handed pitcher who played for eight seasons in Major League Baseball, predominantly with the Baltimore Orioles, has sadly passed away at the age of 37. His death was announced by both the Orioles and the University of San Diego, the school from which he graduated. Details about the cause of death have not been shared.
The Baltimore Orioles expressed their sorrow in a statement, saying, “Our hearts are heavy tonight as we mourn the passing of former Oriole Brian Matusz. A key figure in our clubhouse from 2009 to 2016, Brian was cherished by fans and teammates alike. His love for baseball and dedication to our community truly stood out. He took the time to connect with fans and always brought a smile to those around him.”
Matusz was drafted by the Orioles as the fourth overall pick in 2008 after playing at the University of San Diego. San Diego’s baseball coach, Brock Ungricht, acknowledged Matusz’s impact, stating, “Brian was one of the best players to ever wear a Torero uniform. His commitment to the USD community and his love for baseball were clear to everyone who knew him. While his passing has left a gap in our hearts, his legacy will continue to motivate us on and off the field. We will always be thankful for his friendship and support of San Diego baseball.”
Matusz made a strong debut in the major leagues in 2009 and was a starting pitcher until he transitioned to the bullpen in 2012. This was a significant year for the Orioles, as they reached the postseason for the first time in 15 years.
In 2014, Matusz made a notable contribution, finishing the season with a 3.48 ERA over 63 relief appearances while helping the Orioles secure their division title.
Midway through the 2016 season, Matusz was traded to the Atlanta Braves. He later joined the Chicago Cubs, where he made one final start in the major leagues.
Matusz will be remembered not only for his skills on the field but also for the positive impact he had on his teammates and fans.
