Winners Announced for the 2025 Olivier Awards in London Theater
The 2025 Olivier Awards, celebrating achievements in London theater, opera, and dance, were held recently, recognizing a variety of talents and productions.
In the category of New Play, the award went to “Giant,” while the New Musical award was claimed by “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.” The award for New Entertainment or Comedy was presented to “Titanique,” and the Family Show award went to “Brainiac Live.”
The Revival category was topped by the classical tragedy “Oedipus,” with “Fiddler on the Roof” taking home the award for Musical Revival.
In acting, the award for Actress in a Play was won by Lesley Manville for her performance in “Oedipus,” and John Lithgow received the Actor in a Play award for his role in “Giant.” In the musical categories, Imelda Staunton won Actress in a Musical for her role in “Hello, Dolly!” and John Dagleish was honored as Actor in a Musical for “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”
For supporting roles, Elliot Levey was recognized as Supporting Actor in a Play for “Giant,” while Romola Garai won Supporting Actress in a Play for her performance in “The Years.” Maimuna Memon was awarded Supporting Actress in a Musical for her role in “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812,” and Layton Williams took home Supporting Actor in a Musical for “Titanique.”
The directing award went to Eline Arbo for “The Years,” while Darren Clark and Mark Aspinall were celebrated for their Outstanding Musical Contribution in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”
In other categories, Christopher Wheeldon received the award for Theater Choreography for “MJ The Musical,” and the New Opera Production award was given to “Festen,” with Allan Clayton recognized for Outstanding Achievement in Opera in the same production. The Outstanding Achievement in Dance award went to Eva Yerbabuena for “Yerbagüena.”
The awards also acknowledged excellence in technical categories, including Tom Scutt for Set Design in “Fiddler on the Roof,” Paule Constable and Ben Jacobs for Lighting Design in “Oliver!,” Nick Lidster for Sound Design in “Fiddler on the Roof,” and Gabriella Slade for Costume Design in “Starlight Express.” Additionally, the award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theater was presented to “Boys on the Verge of Tears” at the Soho Theatre.
This year’s Olivier Awards highlighted the creative talents that continue to flourish in London’s vibrant theater scene, reflecting a commitment to artistic excellence in the performing arts.
