Tyler Perry is quietly making a big difference in the lives of the Turpin family, as shared by Oprah Winfrey. During the recent Paley Honors Fall Gala in Beverly Hills, Oprah spoke about Perry’s generosity as he received The Paley Honors Award for his significant contributions to media.
Recalling the heartbreaking story of the Turpin children, who were subjected to years of abuse from their parents, Oprah reminded the audience of a 2018 primetime special. She noted how one daughter, Jordan Turpin, bravely escaped and called for help. “Tyler saw that special, and he reached out,” Winfrey explained. “Until now, no one knew that he has been supporting those children, ensuring they have the financial and emotional backing they need to thrive.”
In January 2018, Jordan, then 17, made the call that would change her and her siblings’ lives. For years, the Turpin children faced severe physical and emotional abuse, including being locked in their rooms and denied basic needs.
Eventually, their parents, David and Louise Turpin, were convicted on multiple felony counts and sentenced to a lengthy prison term. The Turpin siblings, once as young as two and up to 29, have since started new lives and strengthened their bonds.
Oprah praised Perry further, calling him “the quiet Good Samaritan” and highlighting how most of his charitable work goes unnoticed. She emphasized that while many see troubling news and feel sorry, Perry actively thinks about how he can help make things better.
Oprah also shared a personal story about Perry showing up for her when she was in a tough spot. He flew across the country just to reassure her with his presence, telling her, “I needed to see your face. You’re going to be all right.” She deemed this act a testament to his kindness and support.
Through these actions, Tyler Perry continues to demonstrate his commitment to uplifting those in need.
