Police in Colorado have arrested a man suspected of shooting and killing a 7-year-old boy on a tribal reservation. The suspect, 23-year-old Jeremiah Hight, was taken into custody on December 24 atop a mesa near Oljato, Utah. The arrest was made by the Navajo Police Department’s K-9 Unit along with the Bureau of Indian Affairs drug enforcement division.
Hight was wanted in connection with the tragic shooting that occurred on December 11 in Towaoc, Colorado, where the young boy was inside a home on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation. The FBI reported that a warrant for Hight’s arrest was issued on December 19, and they had offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to his capture.
The Navajo police had been actively searching for Hight in the Oljato area since December 21. While further details about the shooting remain limited, authorities mentioned that it seemed to have been “targeted at a residence.”
The child who lost his life was identified as Zamias Lang. A GoFundMe campaign in his memory describes him as a “bright and loving” boy taken from his family and community too soon. The campaign has raised $26,000 for his funeral costs as of December 27.
As of now, it is unclear whether Hight has pleaded or hired an attorney to represent him.
