Recall Alert: Carrots Linked to E. Coli Outbreak
Health officials from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and various states are investigating a recent outbreak of E. coli linked to certain brands of whole and baby carrots. In response to this public health concern, Grimmway Farms announced a recall of multiple sizes and brands of their organic carrots on November 16. While these products may no longer be on store shelves, they could still be sitting in your kitchen.
Recalled Products:
Baby Organic Carrots:
- Best if used by dates: September 11 to November 12
- Brands include: 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Grimmway Farms, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organic, President’s Choice, Raley’s, Simple Truth, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry.
Whole Organic Carrots:
- Available for purchase from August 14 to October 23 (no specific best by dates)
- Brands include: 365, Bunny Luv, Cal-Organic, Compliments, Full Circle, Good & Gather, GreenWise, Marketside, Nature’s Promise, O-Organic, President’s Choice, Simple Truth, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans, and Wholesome Pantry.
What to Do If You Have These Carrots:
- Do not eat any recalled bagged organic carrots.
- Check your refrigerator and freezer for these products and dispose of them.
- Clean any surfaces or utensils that may have come into contact with the recalled carrots using hot soapy water.
If you are experiencing symptoms of E. coli, such as:
- Diarrhea accompanied by a fever over 102°F
- Diarrhea lasting more than three days
- Bloody diarrhea
- Vomiting that prevents you from keeping liquids down
- Signs of dehydration, such as reduced urination, dry mouth, or dizziness
You should seek medical attention. Symptoms often emerge three to four days after exposure, and most individuals recover without treatment within five to seven days.
As of now, there have been 39 reported cases of E. coli across the United States, including two cases in South Carolina.
