Brenda Lee, the legendary singer known for her timeless holiday hit “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” recently shared the secret to her enduring 61-year marriage to Ronnie Shacklett. During a recent appearance on the Southern Living podcast “Biscuits and Jam,” Lee, now 80, emphasized the value of commitment in her relationship.
“I’m just me, and when I commit, it’s hard to get rid of me,” she said with a laugh, highlighting her loyalty and dedication to her husband. Lee noted that while the music industry often pulls people in many directions, staying committed to loved ones is something she holds dear.
Lee and Shacklett met when she was just 17, at a Jackie Wilson concert in Nashville. Instantly drawn to Shacklett’s good looks, she wrote him a note during the event, expressing her desire to stay in touch even though she would be away for three months. Upon her return, she received that much-anticipated call for their first date.
Despite her success as a singer at that time, Lee kept their engagement a secret for three months due to her concerns about her mother’s reaction. Ultimately, she and Shacklett eloped, moving to build a life together amidst the pressures of fame.
Reflecting on her decision to marry without her mother’s blessing, Lee noted that Southern traditions often values adherence to family expectations. Nevertheless, her story highlights a personal commitment that not only shaped her own life but also serves as an inspiring model of enduring love and loyalty.
Earlier this month, Lee also expressed her surprise at her iconic Christmas song reaching over one billion streams, a significant milestone just before her 80th birthday.
