Billy Bob Thornton, the well-known actor, recently reflected on how he found success later in life, during an interview, sharing that this journey has helped him enjoy a longer career in Hollywood. Now 69 years old, Thornton is starring in Taylor Sheridan’s new series “Landman.” In his own words, he feels fortunate to have gained recognition in his 30s rather than in his teenage years.
“I’m glad I became known when I was a bit older,” said Thornton. He continued, “If I had found fame at 18 or 21, I might not be here now. Back then, I was a lot more carefree.” He believes having worked in the music industry before transitioning to acting provided valuable experience that prepared him for the ups and downs of show business.
Born in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Thornton moved around the state in his youth before settling in Malvern. He and his brothers even formed a band called Nothin’ Doin’, which transitioned into a ZZ Top cover band called Tres Hombres when they moved to Houston, Texas.
In the early years of his acting career, Thornton struggled to land significant roles, supplementing his income in jobs like telemarketing and managing a fast-food restaurant. Despite these challenges, he persevered and became a member of the West Coast Theatre Ensemble, eventually gaining attention for his performances.
Thornton’s breakthrough came with his 1996 film “Sling Blade,” which he wrote, directed, and starred in. The film received wide acclaim, earning him an Academy Award for Best Screenplay and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Over time, he continued to build his reputation in both film and television, starring in projects such as “Fargo” and “Goliath,” which further showcased his unique talents.
Besides acting, Thornton is also a musician. He released several albums and is the frontman for the rock band The Boxmasters, which he formed in 2007. The band continues to produce music, with their latest album debuting earlier this year.
Now, with “Landman,” Thornton plays a key role in a modern tale centered around the oil industry in Texas. Set in a world of fortune seekers and challenges, the series is based on a popular podcast and debuted on November 17. Thornton expressed excitement about the project, believing it to be a captivating portrayal of Texas’s culture and economy.
As he steps back into the spotlight, Thornton acknowledges the pressure to deliver after his recent successes alongside creator Taylor Sheridan. “There’s definitely pressure, especially when your director has had such a hit with his previous shows,” he admitted, emphasizing the importance of connecting with the audience through their work.
With years of experience behind him, Thornton remains enthusiastic about his craft, proving that success can often come with patience and hard work. “I love what we’re creating here,” he remarked.
