President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to visit Paris this weekend for the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral, which has undergone extensive restoration following a devastating fire five years ago.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump expressed his honor in attending the event, stating, “I will be traveling to Paris, France, on Saturday to attend the re-opening of the magnificent and historic Notre Dame Cathedral, which has been fully restored after the tragic fire.”
This trip will be Trump’s first official international journey since winning the election against Vice President Kamala Harris. He also expressed appreciation for French President Emmanuel Macron, commending his efforts in the restoration of the 12th-century landmark that suffered great damage in the fire on April 15, 2019.
“President Emmanuel Macron has done a wonderful job ensuring that Notre Dame has been restored to its full level of glory, and even more so,” Trump mentioned. “It will be a very special day for all!”
During his first term, Trump described the Notre Dame fire as “a terrible sight to behold” as he witnessed the flames consume the historic building. He called the cathedral one of the great treasures of the world, overshadowing even some of the most renowned museums. “It’s burning very badly,” he said, emphasizing that the loss transcends national borders.
Trump described the cathedral as not merely a structure but a vital part of our culture that has significant meaning to many. “I have been there, I have seen it. It’s a terrible scene,” he reflected.
According to reports, the Trump transition team has been in talks with President Macron’s office regarding the logistics of the visit. Macron was quick to congratulate Trump on his recent victory and expressed eagerness to work together.
Trump’s Paris trip comes after a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last week, marking a busy time for the incoming administration as they reconnect with international leaders.
