Yellow Jackets Season Ends with Narrow Loss to Edward Waters
JACKSONVILLE, FL — The Allen University football team concluded their 2024 season with a tough loss against Edward Waters in the AME Classic, falling 33-28 on Saturday afternoon.
The highly competitive matchup came down to the wire. With just over a minute left in the game, Allen was leading 28-26 and had possession on the Edward Waters 22-yard line. However, quarterback Jamir Dismukes encountered trouble as he ran to the right. Unfortunately, he fumbled the ball, which was recovered by the Tigers. With only a minute remaining and three timeouts still in their pocket, Edward Waters executed a seven-play drive covering 93 yards, ending with a 22-yard touchdown pass that put them ahead 33-28 with 27 seconds left to play.
Desperate for a comeback, Allen attempted a quick pass play to receiver Nanders Lawrence, who managed to snag a remarkable 32-yard gain to the EWU 43-yard line. However, on the very next play, Dismukes threw an interception, sealing the game for the Yellow Jackets.
Despite the loss, Dismukes had an impressive performance, completing 17 of 21 passes for 349 yards, two touchdowns, and adding 51 rushing yards with one touchdown. Wide receiver Montrell White also stood out in his final game for Allen, racking up 173 receiving yards, including a 40-yard touchdown catch.
The Yellow Jackets scored four times throughout the game, beginning with Lawrence’s 1-yard touchdown catch that evened the score at 7-7 in the first quarter. Freshman running back Jaemias Morrow contributed with a 3-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Dismukes added a rushing touchdown in the third quarter, bringing the score closer before White’s touchdown catch in the fourth quarter pushed Allen ahead, 28-26.
On defense, Andre Phillips and Kirkland Boone led the way with nine tackles each, while several teammates, including Osirus Rhodes and Sharrod Simmon, pitched in with tackles for loss.
In special teams, Sam Herman converted all four of his extra-point attempts, finishing his first season with 27 successful PATs out of 32.
With this game, Allen wrapped up their inaugural season under head coach Cedric Pearl, ending with a record of 2 wins and 8 losses overall, and 1 win and 7 losses in SIAC play.
