The White House has spoken out against a distressing hostage video featuring Edan Alexander, a 20-year-old man who holds dual American-Israeli citizenship. Released recently, this footage shows Alexander in a vulnerable state, visibly upset and covering his face. He was taken captive by Hamas during the attacks on Israel that occurred on October 7, 2023, while serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).
In the video, Alexander appears thin and pale, revealing that he has been held captive for over 420 days. He issued forced messages to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President-elect Trump.
National Security Council spokesman Sean Savett confirmed that the White House is aware of the video and is in communication with Alexander’s family. Savett referred to the video as a “cruel reminder” of the terror imposed by Hamas on innocents from various nations, including the United States. He noted that the conflict in Gaza could cease immediately if Hamas decided to release the hostages, emphasizing that the suffering in Gaza could also come to an end if they would only agree.
President Biden is reportedly working tirelessly to secure the release of Alexander and other hostages held by Hamas. Savett’s statements highlight the administration’s commitment to addressing this critical issue.
Furthermore, the release of the footage comes amid a 60-day cease-fire agreement between the IDF and Hezbollah, an Iran-supported militant group. President Biden remarked that many civilians in Gaza have faced unnecessary suffering and blamed Hamas for their ongoing refusal to negotiate a ceasefire and a hostage deal in good faith.
Alexander’s parents, Yael and Adi, recently shared their painful experience on a television program, recounting a meeting with President-elect Trump. They expressed their determination to bring awareness to their son’s plight, detailing that rescued individuals had seen Edan inside Hamas tunnels, where he identified himself as an American citizen and offered encouragement to others.
The situation remains critical as families await the safe return of their loved ones while the world watches the complex dynamics unfolding in the region. The fight for humanity and justice continues as efforts are made to address the terror of groups like Hamas and the need for accountability and peace.
