Three Gamecocks Earn SEC Player Honors After Big Win
COLUMBIA, S.C. (November 4, 2024) – After a stunning 44-20 victory over No. 10 Texas A&M last Saturday, three members of the South Carolina Gamecocks football team received special recognition from the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Quarterback LaNorris Sellers was honored as the SEC’s Freshman of the Week. The 6-foot-3, 242-pound redshirt freshman from Florence, South Carolina, showcased his skills by completing 13 out of 27 passes for a personal-best 244 yards and two touchdowns. He also made significant contributions on the ground, rushing 15 times for 106 yards and scoring a touchdown. Sellers was key in leading eight scoring drives during the game, helping the Gamecocks surpass the Aggies’ season average of points allowed per game. He joined an elite group, becoming only the fifth quarterback in the last ten years to gain over 500 yards against Texas A&M.
Right guard Torricelli Simpkins III received recognition as the SEC’s Offensive Lineman of the Week. The 6-foot-5, 318-pound redshirt senior from Charlotte, North Carolina, excelled in his blocking, achieving an impressive grade of 88 percent with six pancake blocks and three knockdowns. His efforts contributed to the team’s total of 530 offensive yards while protecting the quarterback from any sacks. This win marked the first time since 2021 that the Gamecocks had two players, Raheim Sanders and LaNorris Sellers, rush for over 100 yards in a single game.
Placekicker Alex Herrera was named the SEC’s co-Special Teams Player of the Week. The 6-foot, 198-pound Super Senior from Columbia successfully kicked three field goals and made five extra points, totaling 14 points in the game. His field goals were made from distances of 25, 44, and 43 yards, matching his personal best for a single game.
Sellers, Simpkins III, and Herrera will be back in action on Saturday, November 9, when the Gamecocks (5-3, 3-3 SEC) travel to Nashville, Tennessee, to face the No. 24/25 Vanderbilt Commodores (6-3, 3-2 SEC). Kickoff is scheduled for 4:15 p.m. ET, with the game broadcast on SEC Network.
