COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Shane Beamer, the head coach of South Carolina, received a surprising message from a rival coach in the SEC who was impressed with freshman quarterback LaNorris Sellers. The text referred to Sellers as “Superman.”
While he may not wear a cape, Sellers has certainly made a significant impression on the field for No. 23 South Carolina. He showcased his talent once again during a thrilling match on Saturday night, leading the team to a 34-30 victory against No. 24 Missouri.
Sellers, a redshirt freshman who stepped into the starting quarterback role after Spencer Rattler moved on to the NFL, delivered an impressive performance by throwing for 353 yards and five touchdown passes. His final touchdown came on an inside throw to Raheim Sanders, who took it 15 yards to the end zone with just 15 seconds remaining, completing a comeback as South Carolina rallied from behind twice in the fourth quarter.
One moment that stood out came during a critical scoring drive when Sellers evaded a sack and successfully connected with tight end Brady Hunt for an important 11-yard gain on a third-and-10 situation. Defensive tackle Alex Huntley was left in disbelief, recalling, “Did he get sacked?” The moment energized the team, with Huntley noting that the second Sellers escaped, he felt something exciting was about to happen.
Sellers has consistently impressed over the past month, helping turn the season around for the Gamecocks. After a tough loss to Alabama on October 12 that left them at 3-3, South Carolina has since triumphed over Oklahoma (35-9) and secured victories against ranked teams including Texas A&M (44-20) and Vanderbilt (28-7).
