A teenager from New York has tragically lost vision in his left eye after using a laser pointer that he bought from Amazon, which is now the subject of a lawsuit. The 16-year-old suffered this devastating injury when the device, identified as a high-powered blue laser pointer from the brand Cofeymera, accidentally shone into his eye, burning his retina. The incident occurred in May 2022, as outlined in a lawsuit filed by the boy’s father, Fred Mamoun, in Manhattan Federal Court.
The lawsuit claims that the laser pointer, priced at $62.99, was “defectively designed” and alleges that Amazon knew about its dangerous characteristics. According to the father, the boy required surgery in an effort to repair the damage to his retina, but his vision has continued to decline since the accident.
The family’s attorney, David Jaroslawicz, pointed out a significant concern regarding the standards of safety testing for products imported from China, stating that consumers have a right to expect safer products when purchasing through reputable companies like Amazon. He emphasized that the public assumes a level of credibility when buying items marketed and sold on such platforms.
Currently, the lawsuit is seeking unspecified damages against Amazon, although the company has not publicly commented on the matter. This case raises important questions about the safety of products available online and the responsibilities of large e-commerce platforms to ensure that the items they sell do not pose a threat to consumers.
