Right-handed pitcher Luis Severino has signed a notable three-year contract worth $67 million with the Oakland Athletics, according to reports from reliable sources. The details of the agreement were shared under the condition of anonymity, as the team has not yet officially announced the deal. Severino has the option to opt-out after the 2026 season to explore free agency.
This contract marks a significant milestone for the Athletics, representing the largest deal ever made by the team, surpassing the previous record of $66 million given to third baseman Eric Chavez for the 2005-2010 period. Despite doubts about the franchise’s ability to secure a high-profile free agent, particularly while planning their temporary move to West Sacramento, California, the A’s have taken a bold step forward in their rebuilding process.
Severino, who will turn 31 in February, joins the Athletics following a season where he posted an 11-7 record and a 3.91 ERA while pitching 182 innings with the New York Mets, marking his best performance since he was an All-Star with the New York Yankees in 2018. After leaving the Yankees, he signed a one-year deal with the Mets that guaranteed him $13 million, plus additional performance bonuses.
Throughout his career from 2015 to 2023, Severino has achieved a 65-44 win-loss record, with a 3.81 ERA over 156 starts and 16 relief appearances between the Yankees and the Mets. By declining a qualifying offer of $21.05 million from the Mets, he set the stage for Oakland to forfeit their third-highest amateur draft selection, while the Mets will receive an additional pick after the fourth round next July.
