An Indiana man is being celebrated as a hero after he discovered two babies abandoned during a car theft.
On December 2, Robert Deane stepped outside his home in southeast Indianapolis to pick up a package. While doing so, he noticed two car seats in a ditch and went to investigate. To his shock, he found two baby girls inside those seats, who had been taken along with a stolen car earlier that day.
“I would do it again,” Deane said. “If you see something, like a baby in a ditch, say something and do something.”
It’s unclear how long the infants were left in the cold, but temperatures had dropped to about 27 degrees that day. Deane’s home is located about four miles from where the car was stolen.
“It’s very cold out here,” said Indianapolis police spokesperson William Young. “Who knows what could have happened if this person had not come outside. We’re still trying to figure out who is responsible for this.”
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police were actively looking for a vehicle stolen with a 4-month-old and a 5-month-old inside at the time of Deane’s discovery. They had issued an alert about the theft, which occurred around 11 a.m. on the same day.
After Deane reported finding the girls, police were informed that the stolen 2013 Hyundai Sonata was empty when they found it. They had also shared details of the lost vehicle on social media for public assistance.
“The plate number on the vehicle is 364CMU. If you see this vehicle, please call 911 right away,” they urged.
Images of the infants were shared online, while police continued their search for the person responsible for the theft. “He did what any good person would do,” Young remarked about Deane. “He got those infants to safety. We are incredibly thankful for that good Samaritan. While we don’t have a suspect yet, finding them is our next priority.”
The investigation is still ongoing as authorities work to bring those responsible to justice.
