No. 1 Gamecocks Overcome Michigan in Season Opener, 68-62
LAS VEGAS (AP) — The South Carolina Gamecocks kicked off their season with a narrow victory over the Michigan Wolverines, winning 68-62 in a thrilling opening game of the Hall of Fame Series on Monday night. Chloe Kitts led the Gamecocks with an impressive performance, scoring 19 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, which helped secure the team’s win.
Tessa Johnson contributed significantly with 15 points, while Joyce Edwards added 10 points to the Gamecocks’ total. This victory marks South Carolina’s continuation of success after claiming the national championship last season.
On the other side, Michigan’s Syla Swords shone brightly, scoring 27 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Jordan Hobbs also made an impact with 19 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the defending champions.
The Gamecocks were favored to win by more than 20 points but faced tough competition from Michigan, who aimed to become the first team since Iowa in the 2023 semifinals to defeat South Carolina.
As the game came to a close, Michigan managed to close the gap to 64-62 with just 22 seconds remaining. However, South Carolina held firm to secure the win.
Despite returning nine of their 11 starters from last season, one key player missing is 6-foot-7 Kamilla Cardoso, who was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder. She was recently drafted third overall in the WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky.
