CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Furman Paladins achieved a solid 67-46 victory over Charleston Southern on Saturday afternoon at Buccaneer Fieldhouse. With this win, Furman improved to an impressive 6-0 for the season.
This game marked a significant defensive performance by the Paladins, as they held Charleston Southern to just 46 points. This is the fewest points allowed by Furman since they restricted their opponent to 45 points in a game back in February 2019.
Furman took control early, leading 28-13 within the first 15 minutes, thanks to a strong defensive effort that kept Charleston Southern to a mere 5-for-22 shooting at that point. The Bucs struggled throughout the game, never managing to close the gap to less than 12 points.
On the offensive side, Furman showcased their skills with over 49% shooting from the field and 18 assists on 28 baskets, all while maintaining only nine turnovers. Graduate student Nick Anderson led the way for the Paladins with 14 points from 6-of-9 shooting. PJay Smith Jr. also played a key role, contributing 13 points and five assists.
Additionally, Garrett Hien and Cooper Bowser were impactful in the paint, helping the Paladins edge their opponents 28-26 in inside scoring. Hien finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Bowser added nine points, three assists, and three blocks.
Daylen Berry was the standout for Charleston Southern, scoring a game-high 16 points, but the team struggled overall, making only 4-of-23 three-point attempts.
Looking ahead, Furman is set to play against the Seattle Redhawks on Tuesday at 11:30 p.m., as part of the Terry’s Chocolate Vegas Showdown in Las Vegas. Fans can catch the game on ESPNU and can listen in on The Fan Upstate.
