South Carolina State Dominates Howard in 38-14 Win
WASHINGTON (AP) — South Carolina State delivered a strong performance on Saturday, defeating Howard with a score of 38-14. Eric Phoenix was a standout player, throwing three touchdown passes, while Jarod Washington made an impressive play by returning an interception 49 yards for a touchdown.
The game took a decisive turn just before halftime when Phoenix found Einaj Carter for a 63-yard touchdown pass. This score put South Carolina State (7-2, 3-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) ahead with 2:35 remaining in the second quarter. Just 46 seconds later, Washington showcased his skills by intercepting a pass and running it back for a touchdown, increasing the lead to 21-7.
In the second half, Phoenix continued to excel, connecting with Keshawn Toney for a 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He then threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Caden High in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.
Phoenix completed 16 of his 26 passes, racking up 272 yards for the Bulldogs. Carter was a key target, making four catches for 120 yards. On the other hand, Howard’s quarterback Ja’Shawn Scroggins had a tough day, completing 15 of 30 passes for 161 yards, with two touchdowns but also throwing three interceptions.
South Carolina State’s defense set the tone early, forcing Howard to go three-and-out on the opening drive. Kazarius Adams capped off a 58-yard drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, giving the Bulldogs a quick 7-0 lead. Scroggins responded for Howard with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Isiah Williams on their next possession, tying the game at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Overall, it was a strong showing by South Carolina State as they continue their successful season.
