Craig Melvin is set to join Savannah Guthrie as the co-anchor of NBC’s “TODAY” show starting January 13. His promotion comes after Hoda Kotb announced she would be leaving the show after almost 20 years. Melvin, who is currently a news anchor on “TODAY” and co-host of its third hour, expressed his excitement during the announcement, saying, “I am beyond excited and grateful.”
Hoda Kotb praised Melvin, saying he was “literally made for this job” and that he possesses all the qualities needed. She will stay on as co-anchor until January 10, referring to her last day as a “party day.” Kotb made the decision to step down after celebrating her 60th birthday in August. She shared that it was time for her to explore new opportunities.
Since 2018, Kotb and Guthrie have made history as the first all-female anchor team on the show. Guthrie shared her admiration for Kotb, stating that while she is “irreplaceable in our hearts,” she is looking forward to Melvin stepping into this new role.
Al Roker, the longtime weatherman and co-host, congratulated Melvin during a Zoom call, expressing his pride in Melvin’s journey both professionally and personally. Melvin was emotional in response, thanking his colleagues as they offered him a box of tissues featuring his face.
Melvin expressed his gratitude for inheriting this role from Kotb, acknowledging her significant contributions to the show. He also mentioned his appreciation for working alongside Guthrie, noting her intelligence and sense of humor.
Libby Leist, NBC’s executive vice president for “TODAY,” shared her enthusiasm to have Melvin as a co-anchor while confirming that he will continue his responsibilities on the show’s third hour with Al Roker and others. The fourth hour of “TODAY” will transition into “TODAY with Jenna & Friends,” starting January 13, which will feature a range of guest hosts until a permanent appointment is made.
Melvin has been a part of NBC News for nearly 14 years, where he has covered significant events, including major sports games and presidential interviews.
