SPARTANBURG, S.C. — In an exciting matchup on Saturday afternoon, The Citadel defeated their local rivals, Wofford, with a score of 30-17. This win allowed The Citadel to regain the Big Dog Bowl trophy, concluding both teams’ Southern Conference seasons.
Quarterback Johnathan Bennett had a solid performance, completing 11 of 18 passes for 166 yards and two touchdowns, both thrown to Javonte Graves-Billips. Besides his passing skills, Bennett added 49 yards on the ground from 11 attempts.
On the rushing front, Cooper Wallace led the team with 84 yards on nine carries, including a significant 54-yard run that helped secure their lead late in the third quarter. Garrison Johnson contributed 35 yards from 10 carries, with Corey Ibrahim chipping in 18 yards from seven attempts.
For the receivers, Graves-Billips stood out with four catches totaling 68 yards. His first touchdown came with a 33-yard reception in the second quarter, followed by a crucial 23-yard catch early in the fourth quarter, taking advantage of a Wofford turnover. Tyler Cherry and Dervon Pesnell also made important contributions with 45 and 28 yards receiving, respectively.
On defense, Cale Williams was a key player, making seven tackles. Evan Byrd also played a vital role with five tackles, forcing a fumble that turned the momentum in The Citadel’s favor. Jeremiah Holmes added to the defensive effort with a sack and an interception.
Ben Barnes continued to shine in the kicking game, successfully converting three out of four field goal attempts, including a long of 44 yards. He missed a chance from 52 yards late in the game.
This victory not only highlighted strong individual performances but also showcased the overall teamwork and determination of The Citadel as they wrapped up their season on a high note.
